our story

Since the early 18th century, the Congregation of the Spiritans Fathers has been nurturing the needs of those in poverty, through projects that combine evangelization with direct, practical action - particularly education - to bring meaningful positive change for the health and welfare of those in need.

In 2000, a missionary priest, Father Sylvester Adeniyi, of the Holy Ghost Fathers - properly known as Spiritans - returned to the Ijebu lands to minister to the communities of the district. Moved by the great needs of the communities around him, Father Sylvester began to formulate ambitious but realistic plans to help improve health, welfare, educational and economic outcomes for people in the area. After seventeen years of working closely with people across the locality, those ideas have begun to take shape through direct action in initiating critical first steps on the farm, while the project moves into the planning phase.

In 2015, a sizeable portion of land was given to Father Sylvester by the community of the Irawo people, in appreciation of the successful completion of other projects, most notable of which was the building of a bridge across a large river to ensure accessibility, even during the long months of monsoon rains, thus removing the many difficult and sometimes dangerous complications caused by living in a very isolated area.

The Spiritans Springs site is rich agricultural and forested land, boasting not only a river but also beautiful a lake that can be used for fishing, only approximately 2km off Oke-n-la road. Such diverse habitats require careful stewardship: this is both a responsibility and a joy.

OUR CHARISM

(About us)

“The evangelization of the ‘poor’ is our purpose. Therefore we go especially to peoples, groups, and individuals who have not yet heard the message of the Gospel or who have scarcely heard it, to those whose needs are the greatest, and to the oppressed. We also willingly accept tasks for which the Church has difficulty in finding workers.” (Spiritan Rule of Life, #4)

OUR MISSION

Spiritans Springs is a community whose mission it is to provide for the welfare of every person we can reach. We do this through the creation of an enabling environment to support the spiritual, physical and practical needs of all.

Our holistic approach in addressing the well-being of others allows us to nurture the healthy growth of each person. We have received the Divine Mercy as a gift. Jesus is that gift: the son of God who died on the cross that we might have everlasting life. In His name, we welcome all to share the gift of Divine Mercy by caring for His children and creation.

In fact, the objectives of Spiritans Springs is directly in line with many of the UN's sustainable development goals. We aim to be able to demonstrate a significant contribution towards locally achieving at least 7 of those goals. It is our hope that our work will provide a positive and replicable working model that will inspire other communities to work towards similar outcomes.

In these ways that we hope to create INTEGRAL IMPACT: through connecting spiritual life, health, well-being, welfare and ecology together from within ourselves and our communities, the love of God will be made even more manifest for His glory and the benefit of all.

"Rescue us, O Lord, for the glory of your name."
